The mesencephalon or midbrain is continuous with the diencephalon and telencephalon rostrally, and with the pons caudally. You can identify the location by the two pairs of rounded structures which are situated on the dorsal surface of the midbrain: an anterior pair named superior colliculi and a posterior pair, inferior colliculi [colliculus (single) = hill].
