In each figure below identify the parts of the parietal lobe listed. The temporal cortex continues into the lateral fissure where its dorsal surface contains the superior bank of the superior temporal gyrus (also known as the transverse temporal gyrus of Heschl). This gyrus serves as the primary auditory receiving area.
Note that there is a lot of confusion in teaching where Wernicke’s area is located, because Wernicke’s area isn’t located in the same place in each person. Thus, a lesion (e.g., stroke, axe, etc.) in the posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus will induce Wernicke’s Aphasia in one person, while a lesion of the supramarginal gyrus will induce it in another. For the purposes of this program, we’ll pretend it’s always located in the posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus.
